Save the Date: VR Arcade & Attraction Summit March 2025
Exciting news from the intersection of technology and fashion: “Fashion Beneath the Skin,” a unique collaborative social VR installation, is set to debut from June 26-28, 2024. Hosted at the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision in Hilversum, this innovative installation promises to merge art, technology, and human anatomy in a visually stunning presentation.
“Fashion Beneath the Skin” offers visitors an immersive journey through fashion history using cutting-edge VR technology. Developed by 5Dculture in collaboration with Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), the installation showcases digitized garments from renowned museums such as the Centraal Museum Utrecht, Kunstmuseum Den Haag, and Zaans Museum, alongside archival material from the Sound & Vision collection.
This VR experience is made possible by a sophisticated volumetric video setup that uses multiple RGB-D cameras to create a realistic 3D representation of participants in real time. This allows two remote visitors to explore the virtual exhibition together, creating a truly social VR experience.
Visitors can see detailed, digitized versions of historical garments, many of which are too fragile to be displayed physically for extended periods. The exhibition is divided into three virtual spaces, each representing different centuries (18th, 19th, and 20th centuries), showcasing the evolution of fashion and body ideals through time.
The installation is currently a prototype, but future plans include enabling remote, simultaneous viewing from different locations worldwide. This would allow museums worldwide to collaborate on virtual exhibitions, providing a shared, immersive experience to audiences anywhere.
Marco Rendina, managing director of the European Fashion Heritage Association, emphasized the cultural importance of this project. He noted that VR technology helps preserve precious fashion artifacts and revolutionizes how we can experience them, allowing for an interactive exploration of fashion’s past in previously unimaginable ways.
If you’re interested in experiencing “Fashion Beneath the Skin,” you must register for a timeslot, as spaces are limited. Visit the Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision website for more details and to secure your spot.
