Save the Date: VR Arcade & Attraction Summit March 2025
Universal Studios Japan (USJ) announced “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba XR Ride” for a limited time from July 19, 2024, to January 5, 2025. This VR-enhanced roller coaster immerses riders in a 10-minute storyline based on an original Demon Slayer anime storyline created just for the attraction”.
Riders will wear VR headsets that provide a 360-degree field of vision, making them feel as if they are part of the anime. The ride follows the characters Tanjiro and Flame Hashira Rengoku as they battle the demon Akaza, allowing guests to experience breathing techniques, blood demon arts, and sword clashes firsthand. This immersive experience combines the physical thrills of a roller coaster with the rich, visual storytelling of virtual reality.
The Kimetsu no Yaiba XR Ride is an update to the wildly popular “Infinite Train Running Dreams VR Coaster currently in operation. Universal claims a 99.1% guest satisfaction rating on the existing ride.
USJ will also host themed dining experiences at the Wisteria Dining Hall and Studio Stars Restaurant, offering dishes inspired by the Demon Slayer characters. Additionally, the popular Nezuko popcorn bucket will make a return, catering to fans who enjoy collectible themed merchandise.
The return of the “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba XR Ride” and its associated attractions at Universal Studios Japan highlights the growing integration of VR technology in theme parks. VR Coasters exploded in popularity in 2016, but the excitement waned as the operational friction and reliability caused frustration. With the progression of VR technology and the application of popular IP, VR coasters are making a slow comeback. This use of VR enhances the traditional roller coaster experience and attracts anime fans, providing a unique and engaging visit to the park.
