Review from Bob Cooney's 2022/2023 VR Arcade Game Buyer's Guide:

HERO ZONE VR

HERO ZONE VR is the largest free-roam platform in the world, with more than 180 locations running their system. It’s easy to set up and operate and offers a wide variety of first and third-party games to meet the needs of all locations. Operators love their flexible licensing model. You can pay by the game, monthly, or annually, and you can switch between plans at your convenience. Hero Zone is available as a software download if you want to buy your own hardware or in a turn-key arena for FECs.

Hero Zone’s greatest innovation is its virtual basement waiting area, called The Hangout. When players don their headsets, they gather in what looks like the ultimate man cave, with playable arcade games, pizza, and beer. It’s a virtual sandbox where players get used to VR. It’s a refreshingly different experience, and players love it.

Operators can set up the Hangout so players can vote on which game they want. After each play, they’re back in the Hangout voting again. Many locations use this feature to sell half-hour or even hour-long sessions, where a host gets them in the game, and it’s unattended for the next hour. Future scenes include a birthday party room with cake, balloons, and party blowers. Hero Zone created the first social gathering space for VR arcades.

Description

Hero Zone is a free-roam VR platform with more than 180 locations worldwide. It runs on standalone headsets (PICO 4, Quest, VIVE Focus) and supports multiplayer sessions for up to 6 players in a shared physical space. The system works in spaces as small as 5m × 5m for 4 players or 6m × 6m for 6 players.

The platform’s signature feature is The Hangout, a virtual waiting room where players gather before and between games. It’s designed to look like a rec room with playable arcade cabinets, pool tables, and other social spaces. Players vote on which game to play next. Many operators use this to sell longer unattended sessions (30-60 minutes), where a host gets the group started and the system handles the rest. The Hangout reduces friction for new VR users and keeps groups engaged between experiences.

Hero Zone offers both first-party and third-party content. The library includes zombie shooters (Dead Ahead), escape rooms (Espionage Express), cooking games (Cook’d Up), and competitive PvP experiences. The company uses a flexible licensing model: operators can pay per game, monthly, or annually, and switch between plans as needed.

The platform is available as a software-only download for operators who want to source their own hardware, or as a turnkey solution with included equipment. Setup takes under an hour in most venues.

Hero Zone acquired SPree Interactive and VR Sports Arena in 2024 and has integrated their game libraries into the platform. SPree’s content includes competitive sports and party games, while VR Sports Arena brought additional sports-based multiplayer experiences. Hero Zone continues to support customers of both acquired platforms under the unified Hero Zone system.
