teamLab will open its first permanent museum in the United States at OCVIBE, teamLab and OCVIBE said on 29 October. OCVIBE is a 100-acre district under construction next to the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The 110,000 square foot building is due to open in 2030.
teamLab is a Japanese art collective. It builds its museums from projected light works that respond to the people moving through them. Visitors wear no headsets.
The museum is designed by smith-clementi, the master planners of OCVIBE. LPA is the architect of record and also works with teamLab on the exhibitions.
The building is largely windowless, with a textured exterior that changes colour with the sunlight. It anchors one end of the district and is visible from the freeway.
OCVIBE is privately funded through a $5 billion commitment from the Samueli Family. Its first guests arrive in March 2027, when a 5,000-capacity concert hall opens. A 50,000 square foot market hall, Katella Commons, opens later that year. The district is due for completion in 2033.
“Bringing teamLab to OCVIBE reflects the importance we’ve placed on integrating arts and culture into the district’s master plan,” said Dan Young, executive director of development at OCVIBE.
teamLab planned a 55,000 square foot museum at Industry City in Brooklyn for August 2019. It paused that work “while we rethink our strategy for entering the American market,” a spokeswoman told artnet News at the time. The Anaheim building is about twice that size.
“It is with great joy that we announce the opening of teamLab’s first major museum in North America, located at OCVIBE in Anaheim,” said Toshiyuki Inoko, who founded teamLab in 2001.
For district developers, OCVIBE gave teamLab the freeway end of its site. That came four years before the museum opens and three years before the district is complete. For operators, teamLab’s nearest attendance figure comes from Tokyo. teamLab Borderless drew 2.3 million visitors there in its first year at $30 general admission, artnet reported in 2019.
Where is teamLab’s first US immersive art venue? At OCVIBE in Anaheim, California, the district under construction next to the Honda Center.
When does the teamLab museum at OCVIBE open? teamLab and OCVIBE have set 2030. OCVIBE’s first phase opens in 2027.
How big is the teamLab immersive art venue in Anaheim? About 110,000 square feet, designed by smith-clementi.
Has teamLab tried to open in the US before? Yes. It paused a 55,000 square foot museum at Industry City in Brooklyn in 2019 to rethink its approach to the US market.
