Ster-Kinekor reopened its rebuilt Tyger Valley complex in Bellville, in Cape Town’s northern suburbs, to moviegoers on Friday 9 October 2026, Bizcommunity reported. Inside it is a six-player free-roam virtual reality arena, which Ster-Kinekor calls the SKX-VR Arena.
Ster-Kinekor’s page for the attraction is headed “Africa’s First Free-Roam VR Arena Inside a Cinema Complex.” Bizcommunity reported the Africa claim as Ster-Kinekor’s own.
The VR Collective reported on 4 October that the French consortium Traverse would open seated virtual reality sessions in cinemas from 7 October. Those sessions run on a 50/50 ticket split. Traverse’s sessions seat viewers in the auditorium. Ster-Kinekor’s arena has players walking.
Six is the arena’s whole capacity at any one moment, not a group size inside a larger floor: Ster-Kinekor describes one dedicated arena. Its page says it is “located exclusively at Ster-Kinekor Tyger Valley.”
Ster-Kinekor credits “state-of-the-art VR headsets, precision haptic controllers and advanced spatial tracking technology.” Those let players “walk, dodge and interact freely in real time,” the company says. Certified operators manage the arena under international safety standards, Ster-Kinekor says.
The game library holds Ocean Depths, an underwater exploration title, and Dinosaur Park. It also holds tactical shooters and science-fiction adventures, according to the same page. Guests aged 12 and older can play. Ster-Kinekor also offers the arena for team-building and group bookings.
Ster-Kinekor has not named the company behind the arena’s headsets, tracking or games.
Free-roam virtual reality already operates on the continent. Zero Latency confirmed in April 2025 that a licensed arena would open in Rabat, Morocco.
In South Africa, Durban Funworld added a 1,500 square metre virtual reality zone to the amusement venue in its redevelopment. The VR Collective reported the zone in December 2025. In Cape Town itself, the District Six Museum opened the District Six VR Experience in 2024.
None of those three sites sits inside a cinema complex.
Ster-Kinekor also installed a premium-format screen it calls Apex, which debuts at Tyger Valley. Apex pairs a wraparound screen with 4K laser projection and a 16.1-channel sound system, Bizcommunity reported. The screen reaches close to the auditorium’s walls and ceiling. Subwoofers sit around the auditorium and behind the screen.
Ster-Kinekor also converted two auditoriums into its Cine Prestige format. Those carry single and double red leather recliners, an adjoining lounge, and food and beverage service.
“Apex has been designed for movie lovers looking for more from their cinema experience,” said Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer of Ster-Kinekor Theatres.
For cinema operators, Ster-Kinekor has put a walking arena and a premium-format screen into the same complex. For vendors, Zero Latency licensed the Rabat arena and Durban Funworld built a 1,500 square metre zone, both outside cinemas. Ster-Kinekor’s page lists the SKX-VR Arena at Tyger Valley alone.
What is the Africa VR attraction at Ster-Kinekor Tyger Valley? The SKX-VR Arena, a free-roam virtual reality arena inside Ster-Kinekor’s rebuilt Tyger Valley complex in Bellville, Cape Town. It sits in the chain’s SKX-PERIENCE line, and Ster-Kinekor’s page described it as now open on 9 October 2026.
How many people can play in the Tyger Valley free-roam VR arena at once? Up to six, according to Ster-Kinekor. That is the arena’s capacity at any one moment, and Ster-Kinekor runs the arena at Tyger Valley only.
Is this the first Africa VR attraction of its kind? Ster-Kinekor claims a first for a free-roam arena housed inside a cinema complex in Africa. Free-roam arenas already run elsewhere on the continent, including Zero Latency’s licensed site in Rabat, Morocco.
What technology does the Ster-Kinekor free-roam VR arena use? Ster-Kinekor’s page credits “state-of-the-art VR headsets, precision haptic controllers and advanced spatial tracking technology.”
