Cosm’s Cleveland venue reached structural completion on August 7, with the 100-foot LED dome frame topped out at the northeast corner of East 4th Street and Huron Road in the Gateway District. The LED dome venue is 70,229 square feet, the dome carries 12K-plus resolution, and it opens in summer 2027 as what Rock Entertainment Group calls “Cosm’s fifth venue and its largest nationwide”. The VR Collective has covered the money going into Cosm and the content going into it. Cleveland is the first Cosm venue that Cosm will not operate itself.
The developer is Bedrock, the general contractor is Whiting-Turner of Baltimore, and the architect is Rossetti. The operator is Rock Entertainment Group, the Dan Gilbert company that runs the Cleveland Cavaliers. The venue anchors Bedrock’s Rock Block, a 3.2-acre mixed-use development in a district that was surface parking.
What the published Cosm Cleveland numbers imply
Rock Entertainment Group chief executive Nic Barlage said in April that the venue is expected to draw roughly 750,000 visitors to downtown Cleveland a year, and NEOtrans reported the site running up to four educational, movie, sports and entertainment programmes a day.
Dividing the two figures gives about 2,050 visitors a day, and roughly 510 people per programme if all four run. Against a 70,229 square foot building, 750,000 annual visits is about 10.7 visits per square foot per year. Both figures are ours, from dividing the two published numbers. Lance Loesberg and Jeremy Dalton worked through dome, cinema and arena programming on The VR Collective’s immersive cinema podcast in July. It implies daytime educational and film content carrying the hours when live sport is not on, which is what Cosm president and chief executive Jeb Terry and board chairman Stephen Winn described at the groundbreaking: children’s educational programming, films for general audiences, and sport from around the world.
Cosm has not disclosed a total. The city issued a foundation permit estimated at $4.4 million and a core-and-shell permit at $12.9 million, with electrical, plumbing, technology and fit-out permits still to come. NEOtrans put the likely total well above $20 million on that basis. Construction started with an April 16 groundbreaking and was scheduled to take 14 months, and vertical construction began in June.
At the groundbreaking, Nic Barlage pointed at the site and said the Gateway District “was a bunch of parking lots and they kind of forgot to address this parking lot… we want to get rid of parking lots and we want to go vertical”. Cleveland mayor Justin Bibb and city council president Blaine Griffin both framed the project the same way, as replacing surface parking in the downtown core.
NEOtrans noted the expected visitor count nearly offsets the annual downtown footfall Cleveland loses when the Browns move to Brook Park in 2029.
Cosm’s largest venue will be operated by Rock Entertainment Group inside Bedrock’s development, which puts the operating agreement, not the screen, at the centre of the next dome’s economics. The utilisation figure to compare against is four programmes a day and around 510 people per programme, by The VR Collective’s arithmetic on the two published numbers, in a 70,229 square foot building.
