Description

The Meta Quest 3 is a standalone mixed reality headset released by Meta in 2023. It runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor, displays 2064 by 2208 pixels per eye, and covers roughly 110 degrees horizontally and 96 degrees vertically. Colour passthrough is handled by two RGB cameras and a depth projector, which is the capability distinguishing it from the Quest 2. The headset weighs 515 grams with the stock strap.

Fleet management. Meta’s own device management tooling is built for enterprise deployments, not for location-based venues, and Meta is winding it down: Horizon management services are scheduled to shut down across all headsets in 2030. Venues running Quest fleets manage them through arcade management platforms built for the purpose, which handle session launch, per-title licensing, timing and attendant control. Content for commercial use is licensed per title through those platforms rather than through Meta.

Battery. Meta states two to three hours of usage on a charge. Demanding content brings that closer to one hour forty minutes in independent testing. A venue running continuous sessions across a trading day plans for a charging rotation, swappable battery straps, or tethered power at the pod.

Hygiene and turnaround. The facial interface is the guest contact surface and is replaceable, which is what makes wipe-down and swap routines workable between sessions. Third-party silicone and leatherette covers are widely used in venues for this reason, and the headset fits the UV cabinet systems venues use for fleet sanitisation.

Meta designed and sells the Quest 3 as a consumer product. Adoption in location-based venues is driven by unit cost relative to headsets specified for commercial deployment, and by the size of the available content catalogue. The trade-offs a venue accepts in return are consumer warranty terms, no dedicated commercial support programme, and fleet management through the free tier rather than a paid managed service.

Review from Bob Cooney's 2022/2023 VR Arcade Game Buyer's Guide:

Meta Quest 3

Since VR is such an experimental technology, software advances come fast and furious. Meta is spending more than US$10 billion a year on research and development for their VR business to make the tech more user friendly. This means they push software to their headsets through over the air (OTA) updates. As soon as a Quest connects to the internet, it starts to download any available updates. As of the date of this article, there’s no reliable way to turn this “feature” off.

As of this writing, Meta is developing a new Quest for Business service that might address these and other issues. Their previous business program, Oculus for Business, forbid arcades as a use before they discontinued the program. Officials at Meta have assured me their new licensing program will be more arcade- friendly. Since Meta subsidizes the costs of their hardware with ongoing fees from their Quest App Store, they’re instituting an annual license fee that will be in the hundreds of dollars per year.
