Sandbox VR launched Deadwood Origins, the fourth title in its Deadwood zombie series, on 25 September 2026. It plays at participating locations in the United States, Canada and Hong Kong, according to the company’s 15 September release. The release says bookings in additional international markets opened from 22 September.
The three earlier titles are Deadwood Mansion, Deadwood Valley and Deadwood PHOBIA. They have sold more than 2.66 million tickets and generated more than $140 million in sales, the release says.
Deadwood Origins is a prequel to all three. The release says it requires no knowledge of the earlier titles.
Players form a security squad escorting a disease specialist to a remote jungle village, according to the release. Infected wildlife attacks their aircraft. The squad then fights through a crash site, an abandoned village, a moving gondola and the ruins of an ancient temple.
The enemies include the undead, infected monkeys, bats and a serpent.
Groups of two to six play together, according to Sandbox VR’s page for the title. The page rates Deadwood Origins 5 out of 5 for intensity. Players wear headsets and haptic vests, carry props and are motion-tracked, so they can see and physically interact with one another.
Sandbox VR’s Charlotte venue lists Deadwood Origins. The venue’s four private rooms each take a group of up to six, according to the 16 September Charlotte release. Four groups of six put 24 players in the venue at once.
“Deadwood Origins is the biggest and most ambitious experience we’ve ever made,” said Michael Hampden, Sandbox VR’s senior vice president of content and creative director.
The release calls Deadwood a Sandbox VR original series. Deadwood Origins joins licensed titles including Stranger Things: Catalyst and Squid Game Virtuals, both made with Netflix. Age of Dinosaurs was made with the Natural History Museum in London.
For free-roam VR operators, Deadwood Origins takes groups of two to six. The Charlotte venue holds 24 players at once in four groups of six. For content studios, Sandbox VR’s own Deadwood series has generated more than $140 million across three titles.
