VRilliant Releases Trials of Atlantis on Hero Zone as a 10-to-45-Minute Modular VR Escape Room

Three players in diving suits dodge giant tentacles in the Kraken's Reach trial of Trials of Atlantis, a modular VR escape room on Hero Zone

VRilliant Studios released Trials of Atlantis on the Hero Zone free-roam VR platform on [RELEASE DATE]. The modular VR escape room runs from 10 to 45 minutes, depending on how many of its five trials a group plays. The Zurich developer built it for standalone headsets, exclusively for Hero Zone, and designed it around repeat attempts.

The range lets a family entertainment center sell a short walk-up slot. A destination VR venue can sell a longer pre-booked session from the same title.

How the modular VR escape room works

Trials of Atlantis drops 1 to 6 players, aged 8 and up, into the sunken city with a Trident to restore. The game is non-linear. Players start in a map room and pick their next challenge by placing a golden statue on a pedestal. Turning over an hourglass starts the clock.

The five trials mix puzzles and physical action, according to VRilliant’s operator walkthrough:

  • Whale Rush: players ride a whale, net fish for points and dodge red puffer fish.
  • Shield Restore: players find broken plates around the playfield and line up lasers with matching towers.
  • Kraken’s Reach: players duck and sidestep tentacle strikes that speed up until time runs out.
  • Hermes’ Harbor: players push crates of fish, coal and cloth into the right workshops.
  • Treasure Heist: one player reads the safe path while another walks a floor of trap tiles to the vault. Treasure Heist needs at least two players.

Winning a trial upgrades the Trident and unlocks chained challenges on the map. The game ends when time runs out or every trial is done. Any group that completes at least one trial sees Atlantis rise.

Short and long sessions from one escape room title

Because each trial stands alone, an operator sets the session length. VRilliant lists 10 to 45 minutes. Hero Zone’s game listing shows 10 to 20 minutes.

A Hero Zone arena runs one group at a time. Hero Zone’s specifications list up to six players on a 6 × 6 metre space. VRilliant’s walkthrough lists up to four players on a 4.5 × 4.5 metre playfield. At 10 minutes of play, an arena fits up to six groups an hour before changeover time. At 45 minutes it fits one.

“I think from an operator perspective, it’s good to have the option of short games,” said Bob Cooney, a VR consultant and executive director of LEXRA, the trade association for location-based XR, who began his career operating immersive location-based entertainment in 1989. “If you’re running Hero Zone in a family entertainment center, it’s hard for FEC operators to even consider a 45-minute experience. If you’re a destination venue running a longer experience, selling tickets in advance is critical, and the fact that this hits both the adventure and the escape audiences could bridge both markets.” Cooney publishes The VR Collective.

Hero Zone runs in family entertainment centers. The VR Collective reported in March 2025 that Future Kid FEC recovered the cost of its Hero Zone installation in seven months.

Replay built into the VR escape room design

VRilliant’s walkthrough tells staff that groups are expected to repeat a challenge several times before they beat it, and that they can switch to a different trial when stuck. A scoreboard in the map room tracks progress and time.

VRilliant’s pitch to arcades names that “one more try” loop as the reason customers return. The VR Collective profiled VRilliant’s PCVR catalogue in March 2026, including the family title Plush Rush.

VRilliant Studios is a LEXRA member and a client of The VR Collective. Hero Zone advertises on The VR Collective.

What this means for Hero Zone operators

Hero Zone operators can run Trials of Atlantis as a 10-minute walk-up slot or as a 45-minute pre-booked session. Groups that fail a trial can repeat it or switch to another, the loop VRilliant ties to return visits.
