Cosm premiered “IT in Shared Reality” at its Los Angeles dome on Friday 6 September 2026. The title is the company’s fourth shared reality cinema release with Warner Bros. and its first horror film. Film Threat, which attended the premiere, reported both. Director Andy Muschietti was there.
The film is playing at Cosm Los Angeles, Dallas and Atlanta, with the Detroit venue opening on 10 September. The VR Collective examined the economics of the dome-cinema format in July, in a discussion with Lance Loesberg and Jeremy Dalton.
“We hope that this format, this movie, is seen across the country and hopefully internationally soon,” said Barbara Muschietti, who spoke alongside the director at the premiere.
The film plays at the center of Cosm’s 87-foot dome, on a 12K+ LED surface. Custom-built screen extensions carry the film’s world past the edges of the frame, Film Threat reported. The image wraps around and above the audience.
The surroundings change scene by scene. Derry’s streets give way to woods and then to sewers. Water runs down the dome surface in the sewer sequences. Film Threat also reported intensified sound design.
Audiences would see “an extraordinary version of this movie,” said Andy Muschietti, who directed the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s novel. He said, “When we started working, I realized what actually the potential of showing this movie in this format was, and it just blew me away.” Film Threat described the 2017 film as the highest-grossing horror film of all time.
“While this might be our fourth cinema in shared reality, it’s our first in scared reality,” said Jeb Terry, president and chief executive of Cosm.
Cosm’s earlier titles in the format are The Matrix, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Scott Coleman of Warner Bros. traced the arrangement to 1 May 2024, when the two companies first walked the venue during construction. Coleman said the four titles run exclusively at Cosm. Warner Bros. is one of two studios tied to the company: The VR Collective reported in July on Sony Pictures buying into Cosm.
The title rolls out at once across Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta and Detroit from 10 September. For dome operators, that means every dome carries the same title on the same release date. Studios are weighing whether their catalog fits the format. IT shows them that shared-reality cinema now extends to horror, alongside the family titles that built it.
